The change is intended to reduce traffic accidents, air pollution and contribute to a better townscape. The town is following in the footsteps of its neighbouring municipalities, which have also reduced the speed limit. The decision, taken by the Environmental and Planning Department of the City of Hafnarfjörður, has been approved by the Chief Constable of the Capital Region and confirmed by the Hafnarfjörður Town Council.

An expert review of accident trends in Hafnarfjörður states that lowering the maximum speed limit from 50 to 30 km/h could reduce accidents by 25%. Accidents can be reduced by 11% by lowering the speed limit from 50 to 40 km/h.
