The awakening of awareness #ÉGLOFA
A group of pupils from primary schools in Hafnarfjörður took part in a Barnaheill democracy forum on Friday. Barnaheill has launched the campaign. #ÉGLOFA which is a social media awareness campaign about sexual violence against children.
The meeting on Friday morning was the start of this campaign. Our young people had the opportunity to express their views. Among other things, it was discussed how parents, the school, the government and others could reduce sexual violence against children.
It probably goes without saying, but the young people we have were so brilliant and specifically advocated for other local authorities to take Hafnarfjörður as a model when it comes to gender and sex education in schools.
Education strengthened in Hafnarfjörður
In the autumn of 2023, the City of Hafnarfjörður enhanced sex and gender education in its primary schools. Comprehensive sex and gender education was then introduced for all pupils in Years 8 to 10. The purpose and aim of the new approach and increased teaching was to increase young people's knowledge and skills in sexual health, respect, boundaries, communication, consent, and other core aspects. It has proven that our young people are pleased with this step.
#ÉGLOFA is the Child Welfare campaign to raise awareness and a call to adults in society to contribute to the elimination of sexual violence against children in Iceland. „Unfortunately, the reality is that far too many children are sexually abused and far too few of them disclose the abuse,“ states the campaign's website on the Barnaheill website.
