Light Walk up Helgafell in Hafnarfjörður

Harpa Gústavsdóttir's dream of a light walk with a good group to her mountain, Helgafell, and a heart-shaped light at the summit is coming true. Harpa is studying at the University of Bifröst and when it came to doing a final project for the course „Creative Arts“, her lecturer challenged the students to create a project about something close to their hearts. Harpa loves walking up Helgafell and experiences the exercise, like many others, as a real tonic for the soul. The idea for a light walk quickly came to life and, thanks to Harpa's own efforts and a cultural grant from the City of Hafnarfjörður for the initiative, the dream will become a reality at the beginning of December.

Harpa Gústavsdóttir encourages all interested parties to walk with her to Helgafell on 6th December.

Two-metre heart-shaped light on top of Helgafell

Lighting Up Love is a light walk which will take place on Wednesday, 6th December at 17:30 up Helgafell in Hafnarfjörður, and Harpa herself will lead the walk. The group will walk together up Helgafell in a single file, using head torches, and participants are encouraged to experience and capture the splendour of the light, which will gently approach the heart at the highest peak. Once at the top, the walk is paused, everyone takes a deep breath, turns off their headtorches for a moment, and thus creates complete darkness together. Shortly afterwards, everyone 'switches on the love' by turning their headtorches back on. At the summit, a two-metre-tall heart will have been placed, which will illuminate during the walk, and participants will also walk towards the heart and love, with the heart growing larger as they get closer. „With this, I want to evoke a certain feeling and get people to think about love and their fellow human beings. Walking is a cure-all, and sometimes you're in a bad mood at the start of a walk, but I invariably come down from Helgafell in a much better mood. There's something special about this mountain. Mountain hikes give me so much, and that's where the idea came from. I want to create an experience and an opportunity for anyone interested to come for a hike and enjoy themselves.“ says Harpa. Participants are encouraged to dress for the weather and to bring a head torch and crampons with them.
