This autumn, 23 new students in early years teacher training have signed training agreements with the City of Hafnarfjörður. In addition, 5 nursery school staff are studying on the 'Leikskólabrú' programme, which is also a great asset to the nursery school's work. The municipality places great emphasis on supporting new recruits and education within the profession. In this way, opportunities and possibilities are opened up for unqualified staff in the nurseries, both for those who have worked for the municipality for many years and for newcomers.
This initiative, which aims to increase the proportion of early years teachers in Hafnarfjörður, began in 2015 and the number of students on the early years teacher training course who receive this scholarship has increased since then, which is very pleasing.
- Various routes are available for those who want to become nursery teachers.
- Working in a nursery is varied, creative and fun.
- The early years teacher training course is good, practical and, above all, rewarding.
- An opportunity to choose a variety of routes so that the days are not the same.
- It's wonderful to watch the children grow and to be with them in their learning process.
A boon for all to increase the number of professionals
The scholarships covered by the study agreement take the form of paid study leave in blocks, allowing students to study while working in a nursery, along with a study grant for early years education students. The scholarships are awarded for varying lengths of time, depending on the chosen course of study. Those undertaking the M.Ed. degree in Early Childhood Education receive a scholarship for two years, while those enrolled in the full M.Ed. programme receive one for five years. Scholarships are also awarded to students on the Early Childhood Education bridge programme at Borgarhólsskóli. It is a great boon for the nursery school community to increase the number of nursery school teachers in the municipality, and the grants are part of the targeted measures taken by the City of Hafnarfjörður to this end.
