Summer Harvest Celebration

Every summer, families from diverse backgrounds come together to celebrate the project, Growing Roots, with a family-friendly get-together in the allotments at Víðistaðatún. There, participants will have the opportunity to meet up, enjoy good company and food, and celebrate the bonds that have been formed over the summer.

The aim of the event is to celebrate multiculturalism and new customs as well as old ones. By creating a platform where people from different backgrounds come together in a positive and open environment, the community is strengthened and the roots of new residents are given the opportunity to grow – just like the vegetables in the gardens.

Grow vegetables and create connections

Growing Roots (Growing Roots) is a community project run jointly by the City of Hafnarfjörður and the charity GETA. The project has now been held for three years in a row and is part of Healthy Hafnarfjörður, which works to promote the health, well-being and active lifestyle of the town's residents.

The aim of Uppskeru is to bring together families from diverse backgrounds living in Hafnarfjörður. Participants are allocated a growing plot in the community gardens at Víðistaðatún. There, they help each other to grow their own vegetables over the summer, under the guidance of a horticulturalist and with support from GETU staff and volunteers.

The project is about more than just growing vegetables. It creates space for new friendships, promotes sustainability, healthy lifestyles and increased community engagement. Through regular get-togethers, it also works to reduce social isolation as well as to strengthen and empower refugees and asylum seekers.
