Tjarnarás Nursery School is looking to hire a full-time teacher from 1 August 2026.
Tjarnarás Nursery School is a four-unit nursery school in Áslandið, where the unspoilt nature is close at hand. The main focus of the school's work is the children's participation, initiative and creativity, with free play taking priority. The school's policy is based on 'Uppeldi til ábyrgðar' and is guided by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
The nurseries of Hafnarfjörður have introduced improved working hours, based on a 36-hour working week for all staff. Staff in the Association of Early Years Educators and the Association of Occupational Therapists have opted for an arrangement whereby their academic year is comparable to that of primary school teachers. These staff members therefore take reduced working hours around Christmas and New Year, during the winter break in primary schools, in the week before Easter, and with longer periods off in the summer.
Key responsibilities and duties:
- Working with the upbringing and education of nursery school children
- Taking part in the planning of professional work
- Participating in parent collaboration in consultation with the Head of Year
- Other duties as described in the job description
Educational and competency requirements:
- Teaching licence (attached)
- Experience in childcare or teaching young children is desirable.
- Good communication skills
- Initiative in work and professional ambition
- Independent and organised working methods
- Very good knowledge of Icelandic, at a minimum C1 according to the ETM Self-Assessment Framework (coe.int), ETM Self-Assessment Framework

A condition of employment is that the applicant has a clean criminal record.
If a qualified teacher cannot be found, consideration will be given to appointing a university graduate or an individual with experience of working with children, in accordance with Act No. 95/2019. We encourage interested applicants to apply, even if they do not hold a teaching qualification.

Remuneration is in accordance with the collective agreement between the Association of Icelandic Local Authorities and the Icelandic Teachers' Association (Félag leikskólakennara).
