30-hour hot water outage in the capital region

News

The hot water will be turned off for part of the capital region from 02:00 on Tuesday, 18 August until 09:00 on Wednesday, 19 August. A complete lack of hot water is to be expected while the supply is cut off.

The hot water will be turned off for part of the capital region. from 2:00 a.m. on Tuesday, 18th August until 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, 19th August. The shutdown, which will last for approximately 30 hours, affects Hafnarfjörður, parts of Garðabær, the upper areas of Kópavogur and Norðlingaholt in Reykjavík. A complete lack of hot water can be expected in the aforementioned areas during the shutdown.

The reason for the closure is that the number of homes receiving hot water from the power stations at Hellisheiði and Nesjavallir is being increased. As a result, less hot water needs to be drawn from Veitur's boreholes in Reykjavík and Mosfellsbær. With increased use of hot water, mainly due to population growth and urban densification, the pressure on the geothermal reservoir that feeds the boreholes in the low-temperature areas has increased, and this must be addressed. This measure ensures that these important low-temperature geothermal areas will be available for the residents of the capital region for the long term.

In order to make the said change, it is necessary to stop the flow and drain the South Pipe, which is one of the main hot water supply lines in the capital region.
