Formal graduation from the project Comprehensive health promotion for 65+ in Hafnarfjörður – a path to a successful later life An event organised by Janus Health Promotion took place at Hafnarborg this week. A radiant group of participants who have completed this two-year project attended the graduation ceremony, received their certificates and celebrated with the group that has trained together under the guidance of Janus Guðlaugsson and his dynamic team. Covid-19 impacted the implementation and arrangements, but the well-organised group found ways to improve their health despite the closures and restrictions during the period. Part of the group plans to continue with guidance, while others will continue on their own, as sustainability in exercise after graduation is one of the project's stated aims.

A group of new recruits will begin training at the end of the month.
At the beginning of this year, the first group graduated from the project in Hafnarfjörður, and this graduation marked a milestone for Janus Heilsuefling and the Municipality of Hafnarfjörður. The targeted health promotion for older residents of Hafnarfjörður continues, and following this week's graduation, around 110 participants are active in the project, which has a total capacity of around 160. An information meeting for a new group was held last Tuesday. Over 60 people attended the meeting, and the new group starting training at the end of the month is already full. The project includes not only physical activity but also regular educational talks focusing on nutrition and various health-related topics such as mindfulness, medication use in relation to training, and education on balance and exercises for balance training.
Health app available to all participants
Janus Health Promotion received a grant from the Technology Development Fund for the development of a health app, which is now ready for use by all participants in the project. With this new app, participants can track their own training through workout plans, monitor their progress after measurements, and keep track of their daily activity. The app is designed as a follow-up and for ongoing motivation for the group.
Emphasis on increased activity among older people in Hafnarfjörður
Health promotion for older people is part of Health policy of the Municipality of Hafnarfjörður. The health strategy covers all social groups, all age groups, all schools and institutions, and the municipality as a whole. The multifaceted health promotion for the over-65s, run by Janus Health Promotion, is one strand of the important project to implement the health strategy. The Healthy City of Hafnarfjörður has for some years focused on increasing the participation of, for example, older residents of Hafnarfjörður through leisure activity grants, social activities and other specific projects, such as lunchtime concerts in Hafnarborg and weekly health and culture walks during the summer months, to name but a few. Mental and physical activity provides important preventative measures which have a positive effect on quality of life and general participation in life and work, on social connections and friendship, and not least on long-term residency for the older age group.
