Development Fund for Tourist Destinations A grant of 16 million krónur was recently awarded for the continued development of Seltún in Krýsuvík. The grant is intended to improve facilities, services and walking trails, as well as enhance outdoor recreation in the area as a whole. This is a very active area of volcanic craters and boreholes, which means that the walking trails must be constantly maintained due to significant wear and tear.
This popular tourist destination is on the destination list.
In 2017, a tarmac surface was laid on the car park and the paths were repaired. In 2018, work began on the preparation for the toilet block extension, which included laying a water pipe from the borehole to Seltún, and new toilets were opened in 2020. The project now planned involves the construction of walkways and a recreational area at the hot spring area on the bar. Currently, there are gravel paths there which are often muddy. The design for the appearance and location has been completed. This project is considered very important and urgent, particularly for safety and nature conservation reasons. This popular tourist site is on a destination plan, and the project is therefore in line with the fund's main priorities.
