News

New ideas for an ambitious development in the centre of Hafnarfjörður were presented at a meeting of the Hafnarfjörður town council this morning.  If it goes ahead, it is clear that a new landmark in the heart of Hafnarfjörður is about to rise, based on a design and layout that will enhance and enrich the life and spirit of the town centre.

New ideas for an ambitious development in the centre of Hafnarfjörður were presented at a meeting of the Hafnarfjörður town council this morning. Previous plans for a 100-room hotel at 26-30 Strandgata in Hafnarfjörður have evolved into exciting ideas and plans for a supermarket and services on the ground floor, a new, modern library and multimedia centre, and a public park on the 2nd. floor and hotel suites in small houses running along the Strandgata. If realised, it is clear that a new landmark in the heart of Hafnarfjörður is about to rise, based on a design and layout that will enhance and enrich the life and spirit of the town centre.

Green spaces and design that promote a vibrant city centre

The project is led by the company 220 Miðbær ehf, which owns the building plot. The revised plans respond to calls from residents, the City of Hafnarfjörður, and local businesses for a supermarket in the town centre, green spaces, and a design that promotes a vibrant town centre. The proposals are in good alignment with the report of the working group on the town centre's planning, with a particular focus on ensuring a good mix of retail, service and residential uses. The current detailed plan allows for 6,400 m2 a new 5-storey hotel with retail and service on the ground floor and a 2-storey connecting building between the hotel and the Fjarðar shopping centre. New proposals envisage the building mass being moved in towards Fjarðargata 13-15, and the building creating the street frontage on Strandgata being lowered from 5 storeys to 1-3 storeys with a recessed 4th storey. This is a building plot of 1,750 square metres, and the current approved detailed plan allows for a building volume of 5,980 square metres on the plot.

„These ideas for development in the centre of Hafnarfjörður are very exciting and will further strengthen it and enhance its unique character. Our town centre has been blossoming and thriving in recent years, and it is important that we, as a local authority, respond to the call of residents and businesses and encourage continued growth by opening up opportunities and possibilities for a diverse range of activities and services, for socialising, entertainment and creativity. In my opinion, these new ideas fit in extremely well with the surroundings, the old town, and the charm of the town.“ says Rósa Guðbjartsdóttir, Mayor of Hafnarfjörður. The Hafnarfjörður Town Council welcomed the planners' ideas and placed special emphasis on the concept and its philosophy being well presented to the town's residents in the next stages.
