The car parks without road charges

The town council has agreed to abolish the street construction charge for car parks and communal vehicle storage facilities entirely. The charge was 25% of the standard street construction charge when car parks or communal vehicle storage facilities for three or more vehicles are built.

More space for the settlement

„The aim of the changes is to create more liveable and greener environments with increased space for green areas and development, while also encouraging the increasing undergrounding of car parks so that the land surface can be used for people and nature,“ says Karólína Helga Símonardóttir, chair of the planning and building committee.

„With these measures, we hope to encourage developers to build car parks and thus create a more accommodating environment for us all,“ she says, adding that the change calls for better use of plots and the environment.

The decision is in addition to changes that the City of Hafnarfjörður approved this summer to ease the financial burden in the early stages of construction.

With these changes, over the next two years it will be permitted to spread the payment of street construction and building rights fees over up to four instalments, over a period of up to 24 months. The payments were previously generally made in one lump sum, but they can now be spread out or linked to the progress of the works or to specific project stages.

Better foundations from the outset

The authorisation can cover detached houses, blocks of flats, commercial premises and larger development projects. The aim is to reduce the financial burden at the start of a project and to create better conditions for it to get underway sooner.

„These are ways here in the town of Hafnarfjörður to support robust, cost-effective and high-quality development in the town,“ she says.
