The Technical School departs from the Port of Flensburg and seeks new horizons.
Delays in the delivery of the plot of land to the Technical College mean that the college is now looking for a new site outside Hafnarfjörður. The Municipality of Hafnarfjörður wishes them well on their way to a new, magnificent school.
Together with the Technical College
The City of Hafnarfjörður and the Technical College have, in recent years, been working on the future development of the college at Flensborg Harbour in Hafnarfjörður, in accordance with an agreement with the state.
It is now clear that the City of Hafnarfjörður will not be able to hand over the plot of land designated for the Technical College within the timeframe the college has set for the start of construction. It is uncertain when this will be possible. Consequently, the planning and design of the new building have already been delayed.
„Hafnarfjörður Municipality and the Technical College agree that there is no room for further delays to the project. The Technical College and other stakeholders in the project will therefore now explore other options for the future location of the college in the capital region,“ says a joint statement from the town and the college on the matter.
„Hafnarfjörður Municipality and the Technical College continue to emphasise a good partnership and that the next steps will be taken in a professional and successful manner. Further information will be provided as that work progresses,“ the joint statement also says.
Plans to build the Technical College's future premises at the South Harbour in Hafnarfjörður were first announced in July 2021. At that time, representatives of the government, the municipality of Hafnarfjörður and the Technical College signed a letter of intent for the project.
The new Technical College is intended to bring together the college's operations, which are spread across numerous buildings in the capital region, under one roof in a modern building. The school at Flensburg Harbour was planned to be around 30,000 square metres and could accommodate about three thousand students.
In June 2024, the government, the City of Hafnarfjörður and the Technical College signed an agreement on the construction of the college. The project was planned in two phases, with completion scheduled for autumn 2029.
Many landowners and properties are on the site where the Technical College was to be built. It took longer than planned to reach an agreement on their relocation. The Technical College and other stakeholders will therefore explore other possible locations for the college in the capital region.
