Christmas reflection by the Mayor of Hafnarfjörður

News

At the turn of the year, one looks back on the past year, and what I feel most is gratitude. Gratitude for the good support, gratitude for the solidarity and fellowship of the residents and others who create our unique town character, gratitude to the town's staff for their professionalism and dedication, but above all, gratitude for the wonderful community that Hafnarfjörður is.

Light, warmth and love

Now the Christmas season is upon us, and the gentle Christmas lights are more beautiful than ever. The Christmas lights remind us of the message of Christmas; to open our hearts to kindness and charity. Christmas is a time to enjoy the moment with those you love, to give of yourself and to receive gifts which are not least about togetherness and warmth. A single beautiful smile can turn darkness into daylight, something we feel so deeply in the run-up to Christmas. The most precious gift costs nothing; it is a kind word and love.

At this time of year, we think especially of those who are less fortunate, have lost loved ones, are struggling with illness, or are spending Christmas in the shadow of trauma. There is a special feeling that comes with being able to help where it is needed most. Showing solidarity and support can be as simple as kind words or a visit – taking the time to give of yourself. These are the most beautiful Christmas gifts.

The Christmas lights attract

Hafnarfjörður lives up to its name as a cosy Christmas town, and a unique atmosphere has prevailed in our town during Advent. More and more people are drawn to the beautiful lights in the town centre, the Christmas Village, Hellisgerði and at Hjartasvellið. Visitors flock here to enjoy the friendly atmosphere, art and culture, and delicious food and drink at our cafés and restaurants, and to stroll between the lovely shops.  The social life flourishes and fond memories of togetherness and cosiness are created. This is how we want our town to feel. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to you, dear residents, for your warm welcome and for your part in creating this wonderful atmosphere.

Gratitude and new hopes

At the turn of the year, one looks back on the past year, and what I feel most is gratitude. Gratitude for the good support, gratitude for the solidarity and fellowship of the residents and others who create our unique town character, gratitude to the town's staff for their professionalism and dedication, but above all, gratitude for the wonderful community that Hafnarfjörður is.

Ahead lies a new year, new opportunities, and new hopes and expectations.

I look forward to tackling the challenges the new year brings us – with positivity and joy, together we can continue to do good things for the benefit of our town.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
