70-year-old smokehouse now a community centre
Exciting things are happening in the old curing house at the back of the Icehouse on Strandgata, as Ægir 220 recently opened there. The Healthy Town of Hafnarfjörður, in collaboration with Svefn Yoga at the St. Jó Wellbeing Centre, are offering interested parties Yoga Nidra – a rejuvenating deep relaxation – and a unique and different experience at this new and raw place by the sea.
An old house gets a new purpose
Exciting things are happening in the old smokehouse at the back of the Icehouse on Strandgata. The Skreiðahúsið was built in 1954 as a storage facility for fish and fishing gear, but like other parts of this old building, it is now taking on a new role, and the wonderful surroundings of the small boat harbour certainly don't do it any harm. It is Ægir Brewery and the Hafnarfjörður Icehouse that are jointly running the operation, and good times will be had at Ægir 220, which is open every day until Christmas from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., and later in line with scheduled events at the venue. Ægir 220 is both a community hub on the harbour front for residents of Hafnarfjörður and the surrounding area, and a unique function and event venue for hire.
The Health Village invites you to Yoga Nidra in Ægir 220
The Healthy Town of Hafnarfjörður, in collaboration with Svefn Yoga at the St. Jó Wellbeing Centre, are offering interested parties Yoga Nidra – a rejuvenating deep relaxation – and a unique and special experience at a new location by the sea. Around 50 people have already signed up for the session on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., and it is likely to be a full house. Admission is free, and both fans and those who have never tried Yoga Nidra are particularly encouraged to register, attend and enjoy. Everyone is also encouraged to come well-prepared for the relaxation session with the appropriate equipment: a mat, pillow and blanket. This initiative by the health town of Hafnarfjörður is part of promoting the health of its residents and friends, and aligns with the health strategy that the municipality formulated in 2016. One of the three overarching goals of the health strategy is to find ways and solutions to enhance the well-being of residents, and the health town is making a concerted effort to offer a diverse range of health-related events all year round, now during Advent, in collaboration with various partners. Yoga Nidra is a guided deep relaxation and research shows, among other things, that 45 minutes of Yoga Nidra is equivalent to 4 hours of sleep, in addition to which research, both in Iceland and abroad, show Nidra's value for those dealing with stress, strain, sleep difficulties, anxiety or depression. Practitioners lie on a mat in complete relaxation and are guided step-by-step by a Yoga Nidra teacher. The body sleeps, but the subconscious remains awake. This nourishing session takes place, as mentioned, in Ægi 220, a new and raw meeting hall that has been opened in a 70-year-old warehouse in the harbour area. It is therefore shaping up to be a different and unique experience by the sea.
