A new treasure hunt for children at Hvaleyrarvatn
A nine-stop scavenger hunt now adorns the area around Hvaleyrarvatn. The Hvaleyrarvatn scavenger hunt is designed to make family walks around the lake even more lively and to draw attention to interesting places.
Yes, now there'll be fun at Hvaleyrarvatn.
A nine-stop scavenger hunt now graces the area around Hvaleyrarvatn. The game has been set up by Hönnunarhúsið ehf. for the Healthy Town of Hafnarfjörður. The man behind the design is Guðni Gíslason, who is, among other things, the editor of Fjarðarfréttir.
The rat race at Hvaleyrarvatn is intended to encourage walking around the lake and draw attention to interesting places. It is also intended to give parents an opportunity for some wholesome time together with their children. The route from the first sign to the ninth is approximately 2.2 km, and the full circuit is about 2.7 km.
Ideal for exploring in-game.
„The walk shouldn't take more than half an hour,“ says Gudni. „However, it's ideal to explore more on the way, read up on Hvaleyrarselið, see more trees in the large arboretum, walk into the forest and enjoy life.“
Guðni chose the nine locations. „The first clue is at the car park where most people arrive. On the clue is a QR code which links to the game's website where you can find more information,“ he says, but points out that you can actually start anywhere. „The next marker is in Paradise Grove, where it tells the story of the grove. The third marker is by a birch grove not far away.“ The markers can also be found at the sandy beach, the arboretum, the scout site, the Brothers' Grove, the Knights' Grove and Hvalerarsel.
New ways, other perspectives
„Yes, the aim is to encourage families with children to walk around the area. There are numerous walking paths there and the treasure hunt encourages people to explore the area and walk into the woods,“ he says. „Now it's a case of finding the signs, but also of looking around.“
Guðni says that although the treasure hunt is intended for children, it is more successful if adults are with them to explain things. He is certainly not taking part in a treasure hunt for the first time. Guðni organises the Hafnarfjörður Scavenger Hunt, which is now being staged for the 27th time, and he is laying it out for the 17th time. „That scavenger hunt is much bigger and covers the entire town. It comes with a free scavenger hunt map which will hopefully be out of print next week.“
Yes, this is certainly great fun together. We encourage families to have a go at the family treasure hunt at Hvaleyrarvatn.
