The city of Cuxhaven in Germany and Hafnarfjörður formally established a twinning partnership in the autumn of 1988, and that relationship has been very active in many ways ever since. A historical plaque about the twin towns of Hafnarfjörður and Cuxhaven was unveiled in Germany recently. The plaque is located at the „Kugelbake“ on the coastal path by the harbour, but on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the twinning in 2013, gave the German city the town of Hafnarfjörður a four-metre-high wooden replica of a 30-metre-high navigational beacon, which was erected in 1703 on the coast in the north of Lower Saxony, where the River Elbe flows into the North Sea. The Kugelbake is the coat of arms of Cuxhaven, just as the lighthouse is that of Hafnarfjörður, and it was considered ideal to place the historical plaque by the navigational mark to better explain its origin.

The sign was unveiled some time ago.

The plaque was unveiled recently by the Mayor, Rósa Guðbjartsdóttir, and Wilhelm Eitzen, chairman of the Cuxhaven-Hafnarfjörður twinning association, in the presence of other distinguished guests from the association's board. The text for the sign was written by Björn Pétursson, the town's archivist, and the photographs were taken by Ólafur Már Svavarsson.

A very active friendship in many ways for many years.

As an example of further outcomes of the twinning partnership, in 1993 a new square in Cuxhaven's town centre was inaugurated and named „Hafnarfjörður Platz“, and on the Sea Bay area in Hafnarfjörður, a new street was named „Cuxhaven Street“ on the same occasion. Immediately upon the establishment of the twinning agreement in 1988, a decision was also made to create a so-called „Cuxhaven Grove“ by Hvaleyrarvatn, and a tradition has been established that when delegations from Cuxhaven visit, their representatives plant a tree here whenever the opportunity arises, as the grove has expanded significantly and become well-established in recent years. In addition to this, the cooperation has been extensive and rewarding in youth and sports affairs, education and cultural matters, on the political stage, and not to forget the business community. Furthermore, Cuxhaven has annually gifted a Christmas tree to the people of Hafnarfjörður, which has brightened the town's short days for decades, first at the south harbour and in recent years in the Christmas village in the town centre.

Hafnarfjörður has sister cities all over the world, and here you can learn about them all.
