Come and celebrate the national day with us in Hafnarfjörður. 

A national day celebration, with events taking place all over the town, will be on offer throughout Hafnarfjörður. The national day begins with a flag-hoisting ceremony at Hamrinn at 8 a.m., hosted by the Hraunbúar Scout Association, and concludes with a spectacular evening programme at Thorsplani.

 

8:00 Flags lowered and flag salute at the Rock

The Hraunbúar Scout Group is flying its flag all over town.

9:00-13:00 Sea swimming at Langeyrarmalir

The Urturnar Sea Swimming Club guide the townspeople in sea swimming. The steam billowing and Hafnarfjörður Swimming Pool open.

10:00-14:00 Hafnarfjörður Skateboard Club, Flatahrauni

Open house at the skate park on Flatahraun 41. You can come and have fun on skateboards, BMX bikes and scooters. Free entry!

10:00-18:00 Open house at the Þyt Sailing Club

The sailing club Þytur will be holding an open house on National Day. You can try kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, sailing a dinghy, and even go on a trip in a keelboat, all free of charge.

10:30 National costume gathering in Flensburg

Annríki – National Costumes and Jewellery provides assistance with wearing national costumes and encourages the people of Hafnarfjörður to wear national costumes from all countries. Folk costume photoshoot at Hafnarborg at 14:30.

11:00-13:00 Get Together Family Festival in the Harbour of Hope at Hafnarfjarðarkirkja

Iceland's National Day will be celebrated on 17th June with a flag-making workshop and waffles at the Get Together centre in the Harbour of Hope – Hafnarfjarðarkirkja (entrance from Suðurgata). Please feel free to pop in for a coffee and some waffles. Materials will be provided for children to make their own flags. All welcome! Get Together is run by GETU – a charity that supports asylum seekers and refugees based in Hafnarfjörður and the surrounding area.

12:00 Harbour City

Visitors are welcome to the museum's current exhibitions, 'On the Sea of Tranquillity', a work by Hildur Ásgeirsdóttir Jónsson in the Main Hall, and 'A Hesitant Line', a work by Elísabet Brynhildardóttir in the Sverris Hall. All are welcome – admission is free, as it is every day of the year.

    As in previous years, Annríki will hold a special national costume exhibition in the Pharmacy on the museum's lower floor, where men's and women's national costumes through the ages will be displayed, seeking to shed light on their development, In addition, the focus will be on knitted garments from the 18th and 19th centuries, as the displays have proved very popular each year.

12:00 Hafnarfjörður Library

Welcome to the Library on National Day! Music, elves, coffee and cake – all in its typically traditional form. The local beauty will be skated and robed, and a talk on the Icelandic national costume will take place at the same time, starting at 12:30. Music, coffee, pastries and good cheer all day long!

13:00 Parade from Flensburg School

Marching down Hringbraut, along Lækjargata and onto Strandgata to Thorsplan. The Hafnarfjörður Pipe Band, the Hraunbúar Scout Group and Vikings lead the parade.

13:00-16:30 Strandgata Sports Hall

Hafnarfjörður Badminton Club will be holding an open house where you can try table tennis and badminton. There will also be an obstacle course for the youngest generation. You will also be able to buy piping hot waffles and coffee to support the club's competitive athletes. Outside the sports hall, there will be a bouncy castle.

13:30 - 16:30 East Street Festival

  • The residents of East Street welcome residents of Hafnarfjörður and the surrounding area, and as in previous years, there will be plenty of fun and exciting things on offer.

Elvis Iceland is holding a concert at Hrafnista and Sólvangur.

  • Bouncy castles throughout the festival grounds

  • Unexpected Events of the Hafnarfjörður Summer School Art Group
  • Creative summer jobs will be on the move on East Street and further afield in the fjord.

Guided pony rides with the Sörli Riding Club at the end of Austurgata from 14:00 to 16:00.

11:00-18:00 VIKING FESTIVAL at Víðistaðatún

The Viking Festival in Hafnarfjörður takes place in Víðistaðatún from 14th-18th June and is free to enter. Over 150 Vikings will make their way to Hafnarfjörður from both within and outside the country.

The programme is varied and there is plenty going on, including: a combat demonstration, a crafts exhibition, Viking games, blacksmithing, herbal dyeing, a Viking school for children, various stalls, archery competitions, food & drink. The performance artist Björke returns after a long absence, and the bands Krauka and Hrafnboði will be playing for guests throughout the day. Krauka will be playing for a dance on Friday and Saturday evening.

You will be able to try both archery and axe-throwing for a small fee; all proceeds will go directly to the Viking Festival in Hafnarfjörður. Rimmugýgur welcomes you to the 26th festival they are holding in Hafnarfjörður.

K14:00 The Hafnarfjörður Brass Band will play light, playful summer music.

  • The Packhouse, 6 West Street, a new themed exhibition about the police in Hafnarfjörður, an exhibition on the history of Hafnarfjörður and a toy exhibition.
  • Beggubúð, 3b Kirkjuvegur, a folk festival-themed shop museum exhibition.
  • The Sívertsen House, 6 Vesturgata, The story of Bjarne Siversen and the home of an upper-class family from the early 19th century.
  • Siglufjörður, Church Street 10, Newly furnished and renovated as an example of a working-class home from the early 20th century.
  • Bookless Bungalow, 32 Vesturgata, an exhibition about the Bookless brothers and the foreign fishing industry in Hafnarfjörður in the first half of the 20th century.
  • The Coastal Path, a new exhibition of selected photographs by the couple in the Box House, Herdís and Guðbjart.

14:00-16:00 Blue Light Driving, Capital Region Fire and Rescue

To mark the occasion, the Capital Region Fire and Rescue Service will be driving through several streets in the municipality with blue lights and the Icelandic flag from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Unfortunately, it is not possible to schedule this precisely, as the fire service is on duty as usual. Let's give them a warm welcome; it's a great opportunity to get out and celebrate.

16:00 THE FREE CHURCH – THEY

Hooray! The band ÞAU is celebrating the national day in their hometown of Hafnarfjörður with a concert at the Fríkirkjan at 4 p.m. ÞAU are Rakel Björk Björnsdóttir, a singer and actress, and Garðar Borgþórsson, a guitarist and drummer. THAU perform original songs set to poems by well-chosen Icelandic poets. THAU look forward to seeing you!

An evening programme in the heart of Hafnarfjörður on the national day itself returns to the 17th June celebrations. Young musicians will perform alongside more experienced ones.

Transport and road closures

The town centre will be closed to car traffic during the celebrations:

  • Strand Street at Lækjargata
  • Linnets Path at Fjardargata and 23 Hverfisgata
  • East Road from Linnets Lane
  • Mjósund by East Street
  • Lakeside Path from Arnarhraun to Lækjarskóli
  • Disabled parking at 1 Linnetsstíg

Residents are encouraged to park legally near the town centre, walk or take the bus to the event venue. We point to the numerous car parks at the marina, Lækjarskóli, Tækniskólinn, Flensborg, the sports hall on Strandgata and Víðistaðaskóli.

Let's leave the dogs at home

It should be noted that dogs are more comfortable at home than in crowds.

Please note that dogs are not permitted at event venues.
