A national day celebration, with events taking place all over the town, will be on offer throughout Hafnarfjörður. The national day begins with a flag-hoisting ceremony at Hamrinn at 8 a.m., hosted by the Hraunbúar Scout Association, and concludes with a spectacular evening programme at Thorsplani.

The Urturnar Sea Swimming Club guide the townspeople in sea swimming. The steam billowing and Hafnarfjörður Swimming Pool open.
Open house at the skate park on Flatahraun 41. You can come and have fun on skateboards, BMX bikes and scooters. Free entry!
The sailing club Þytur will be holding an open house on National Day. You can try kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, sailing a dinghy, and even go on a trip in a keelboat, all free of charge.
Annríki – National Costumes and Jewellery provides assistance with wearing national costumes and encourages the people of Hafnarfjörður to wear national costumes from all countries. Folk costume photoshoot at Hafnarborg at 14:30.
Iceland's National Day will be celebrated on 17th June with a flag-making workshop and waffles at the Get Together centre in the Harbour of Hope – Hafnarfjarðarkirkja (entrance from Suðurgata). Please feel free to pop in for a coffee and some waffles. Materials will be provided for children to make their own flags. All welcome! Get Together is run by GETU – a charity that supports asylum seekers and refugees based in Hafnarfjörður and the surrounding area.
Visitors are welcome to the museum's current exhibitions, 'On the Sea of Tranquillity', a work by Hildur Ásgeirsdóttir Jónsson in the Main Hall, and 'A Hesitant Line', a work by Elísabet Brynhildardóttir in the Sverris Hall. All are welcome – admission is free, as it is every day of the year.
Welcome to the Library on National Day! Music, elves, coffee and cake – all in its typically traditional form. The local beauty will be skated and robed, and a talk on the Icelandic national costume will take place at the same time, starting at 12:30. Music, coffee, pastries and good cheer all day long!
Marching down Hringbraut, along Lækjargata and onto Strandgata to Thorsplan. The Hafnarfjörður Pipe Band, the Hraunbúar Scout Group and Vikings lead the parade.
Hafnarfjörður Badminton Club will be holding an open house where you can try table tennis and badminton. There will also be an obstacle course for the youngest generation. You will also be able to buy piping hot waffles and coffee to support the club's competitive athletes. Outside the sports hall, there will be a bouncy castle.
The celebrations in the centre of Hafnarfjörður begin with a formal programme and entertainment on Thorsplan.

Guided pony rides with the Sörli Riding Club at the end of Austurgata from 14:00 to 16:00.
The Viking Festival in Hafnarfjörður takes place in Víðistaðatún from 14th-18th June and is free to enter. Over 150 Vikings will make their way to Hafnarfjörður from both within and outside the country.
The programme is varied and there is plenty going on, including: a combat demonstration, a crafts exhibition, Viking games, blacksmithing, herbal dyeing, a Viking school for children, various stalls, archery competitions, food & drink. The performance artist Björke returns after a long absence, and the bands Krauka and Hrafnboði will be playing for guests throughout the day. Krauka will be playing for a dance on Friday and Saturday evening.
You will be able to try both archery and axe-throwing for a small fee; all proceeds will go directly to the Viking Festival in Hafnarfjörður. Rimmugýgur welcomes you to the 26th festival they are holding in Hafnarfjörður.

K14:00 The Hafnarfjörður Brass Band will play light, playful summer music.
To mark the occasion, the Capital Region Fire and Rescue Service will be driving through several streets in the municipality with blue lights and the Icelandic flag from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Unfortunately, it is not possible to schedule this precisely, as the fire service is on duty as usual. Let's give them a warm welcome; it's a great opportunity to get out and celebrate.
Hooray! The band ÞAU is celebrating the national day in their hometown of Hafnarfjörður with a concert at the Fríkirkjan at 4 p.m. ÞAU are Rakel Björk Björnsdóttir, a singer and actress, and Garðar Borgþórsson, a guitarist and drummer. THAU perform original songs set to poems by well-chosen Icelandic poets. THAU look forward to seeing you!
An evening programme in the heart of Hafnarfjörður on the national day itself returns to the 17th June celebrations. Young musicians will perform alongside more experienced ones.

The town centre will be closed to car traffic during the celebrations:
Residents are encouraged to park legally near the town centre, walk or take the bus to the event venue. We point to the numerous car parks at the marina, Lækjarskóli, Tækniskólinn, Flensborg, the sports hall on Strandgata and Víðistaðaskóli.
It should be noted that dogs are more comfortable at home than in crowds.
Please note that dogs are not permitted at event venues.
