In the autumn of 2008, eight families fled horrific conditions in the Al Waleed refugee camp and were granted asylum in Akranes. They were all single mothers with children, of Palestinian origin but who had spent their entire lives in Iraq. The author met the women and their story, and here writes with insight and knowledge about stateless Palestinians, the invasion of Iraq, refugee camps in no-man's-land, and the long journey to the peninsula.

The Framför Reading Society is the oldest reading society in the country and meets monthly at Hafnarfjörður Library, led by the literary scholar Hjalti Snæ Ægisson.
