A revised and updated equality plan for the City of Hafnarfjörður was published and presented to City of Hafnarfjörður staff in the autumn of 2023, as local authorities' equality plans must be reviewed every four years. Hafnarfjörður is committed to the systematic dissemination of knowledge within the municipality and uses it to improve services, combat prejudice, promote equality in the workplace, and educate its residents.

Action Plan on Equality Matters 2023-2027

A revised and updated equality plan for the City of Hafnarfjörður was published and presented to its staff in the autumn of 2023, as local authorities' equality plans must be reviewed every four years. The Equality Plan for the City of Hafnarfjörður for the period 2023-2027 was approved by the City Council of Hafnarfjörður in June 2023, and a review will take place again by the end of May 2027. Hafnarfjörður is committed to the systematic dissemination of knowledge within the municipality, using it to improve services, combat prejudice, promote equality in the workplace, and educate its residents.

The City of Hafnarfjörður's equality plan includes, among other things:

  • Participation in committees, councils and boards on behalf of the municipality

  • Vacancies, vocational training, further education and continuing professional development
  • Work-life balance
  • Gender-based violence, gender-based and sexual harassment
  • Equality in the workplace and increased opportunities for people with different abilities

Each component is well-defined with objectives, actions, responsibilities and a timeframe.

Hafnarfjörður's Equality Plan 2023-2027

A perspective integrated into all the town's activities

The aim of the City of Hafnarfjörður's equality plan is to integrate gender and equality perspectives into all the city's activities as a public authority, an employer and a service provider. The action plan is based on the Act on the Equality of the Sexes and Equal Rights of the Sexes No. 150/2020, and the Act on the Administration of Equality Matters No. 151/2020, the Act on Equal Treatment in the Labour Market Regardless of Race, National Origin, Religion, Belief, Disability, Reduced Working Capacity, Age, Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, Sex Characteristics or Gender Expression no. 86/2018, The equality policy of the City of Hafnarfjörður, approved by the City Council on 1 February 2017 and the European Charter for Equality in the Local Community, which was signed in 2008. Hafnarfjörður is an equal-opportunity and democratic municipality that strives to ensure all individuals have equal opportunities and the chance to have an impact, and where diverse needs are recognised.
