Hraunvallaskóli is advertising for a special needs teacher to provide special needs tuition for the 2026-2027 academic year.
The school is unique in that both a nursery and a primary school are run within its walls. It could be said that pupils begin their school journey at eighteen months old at Hraunvallar School and complete it at the age of sixteen. Hraunvallar School operates according to the philosophy of the open school, and the building was designed with this in mind. Teaching is geared towards meeting the diverse needs of individuals, who learn to organise their own learning and assess their own progress. The curriculum is structured around group work, thematic learning, individual work, problem-solving, critical thinking, and students' ability to acquire knowledge and use the latest information and communication technology to do so. Teachers work together in teams during lessons and in the planning and preparation of their teaching. Pupils in the same year group are in common tutor groups with a shared form tutor in their home areas. The values of Hraunvallar School are Friendship – Cooperation – Responsibility.
A special needs teacher is part of the school's special needs team and works in close collaboration with a child's class teacher to support their learning.
Key responsibilities and duties:
- Provides special tuition at the school.
- Works to develop school operations in collaboration with management and colleagues.
- Promoting the welfare of students in collaboration with parents and other professionals.
- Works in accordance with the school's policy on SMT school skills, which is designed to create a good atmosphere in schools and ensure the safety and welfare of pupils and staff.
- Other tasks as per the job description and as assigned by a superior.
Educational and competency requirements:
- Teaching licence (copy of licence to be attached to the application)
- Experience of teaching in a primary school is desirable.
- Interest in working with children and young people
- Agility in communication, flexibility and cooperativeness
- Initiative and autonomy in work methods
- Positivity and an interest in working in a creative and ambitious environment
- Punctuality and conscientiousness
- Good command of Icelandic. The proficiency benchmark C1 is taken as a reference. criteria of the European Language Portfolio.
