Management and conservation plans approved
The Minister of the Environment, Energy and Climate has approved management and conservation plans for, on the one hand, the nature reserve Litlaborgir and, on the other, the nature reserve Kaldárhraun and Gjárnar. The nature reserves are both located in the municipality of Hafnarfjörður. The area was protected in 2009. Kaldárhraun and Gjárnar were also protected in 2009, and the lava field is one of the last examples of a complete and undisturbed scree lava field in the municipality of Hafnarfjörður.
The natural wonders of Litlaborgir, Kaldárhraun and Gjárnar
Guðlaugur Þór Þórðarson, Minister of the Environment, Energy and Climate, has approved management and conservation plans for the natural monument Litluborgir and the natural monument Kaldárhraun and Gjárnar. Both natural monuments are in the land of the City of Hafnarfjörður. Litluborgir are lava mounds and pseudo-craters that were formed when lava flowed over a lake. The area was protected in 2009. Kaldárhraun and Gjárnar were also protected in 2009, and the lava field is one of the last examples of a complete and undisturbed lava field in the municipality of Hafnarfjörður.

They are in an area that is a very popular recreational area, so it is high time that a plan was in place for how to protect the area, but also how to ensure that people can enjoy them. The management and conservation plan sets out future policies, along with a three-year action plan. The plan was developed in collaboration between the Environmental Agency and the City of Hafnarfjörður. A natural landmark is one category of protected area, and the aim of designating such areas is to protect unique natural formations due to their scientific value, beauty, or distinctiveness.
