Participants of all ages are searching for 27 geocache markers.
The game started at the beginning of June and ran until 26 September. 27 geocaches have been placed, some in or near the town of Hafnarfjörður, but most in the town's vast hinterland and even beyond. A high-quality aerial photograph map was printed, with streets and walking trails marked on it and the locations of the geocaches. Participants then have the task of finding the best route to the caches, and sometimes it takes several attempts to find them. Participants are of all ages, and it is a popular family game. The aim of the game is to encourage people to enjoy the Hafnarfjörður countryside, and it is published by Hönnunarhúsið in collaboration with the Municipality of Hafnarfjörður. It is estimated that at least six thousand visits were made to the scavenger hunt locations this summer. Participants come from far and wide, though mostly from Hafnarfjörður, but an increasing number from the neighbouring municipalities take part. This year's theme was ancient national roads, streets and paths. Omar Smári Ármannsson, who runs the information site Ferlir.is, provided invaluable assistance with the game's creation, as he has before. This was the 25th orienteering game in 26 years, and it was overseen and laid out by Guðni Gíslason for the 15th time.
Numerous sponsors
This year, Rio Tinto in Iceland is the main sponsor of the game, in addition to the City of Hafnarfjörður, which is a partner in the game's release. Numerous other companies sponsor the event, for example by providing prizes. Fjallakofinn provided the main prizes this year: walking boots for the winners in all three categories, Toughest – 27 badges, Hiking Hero – 18 badges and Lightfoot – 9 badges. In addition, two runners-up in each category were recognised, one in each category received a swimming pass from Hafnarfjörður Swimming Pool, and the others received a gift voucher from Fjarðarkaup, a meal for two at Von, and a voucher from Altis. A total of 26 raffle prizes were also awarded, donated by Hafnarfjörður Swimming Pool, Altis, Von, Burger-inn, Píluklúbbinn, Ban Kúnn, Tilveran, Rif, Krydd, Music and Sport, the Thöll Nursery and Gormur.is. The game was also sponsored by Landsnet, HS-veitur and H-berg.
125 attended the harvest festival
A total of 125 people attended the Ratleiks Hafnarfjarðar awards ceremony, which was held at Apótekinu in Hafnarborg last Thursday. Never before have so many people attended, and the venue was packed, with many having to stand. The game was reviewed, photos were shown and prizes were awarded. There was clear satisfaction with the game, and people were already looking forward to next year. People commented that despite having taken part many times, they always experience and see something new in our beautiful countryside.
