First meeting of the town council after the election
The first meeting of the newly elected Hafnarfjörður town council took place yesterday, Wednesday, 3rd June. At the meeting, new councillors took their seats and elections were held for the town's boards and committees for the upcoming term of office.
This first meeting marked the start of a new term of office following the local elections held on 16th May.
New majority
A new majority of the Independence Party, Viðreisn and the Social Democratic Party takes over the running of the town for the 2026–2030 term. Árni Stefán Guðjónsson has been elected Mayor of the Town Council and Orri Björnsson will continue as Chairman of the Town Board.
The local elections led to significant changes in the composition of the town council. A total of six new councillors took their seats following the election, while several experienced members stepped down after a successful career in the service of the town's residents. See the result here.
Guðmundur Árni says goodbye
Gudmundur Árni Stefánsson of the Social Democratic Party is one of those who has left the town council. Gudmundur Árni has a long history in the politics of Hafnarfjörður. He first joined the town council in 1982 and later served as mayor from 1986 to 1993. He returned to the town council in 2022. He has therefore, with breaks for serving in the Althingi, the government, and the diplomatic service, contributed to local politics for more than four decades. We offer him our sincere thanks for this significant contribution to the municipality and its residents.
New mayor
Thórður Þórarinsson was appointed mayor by the majority at the meeting. He is the former executive director of the Independence Party. Before that, he was the executive director of the Nordic Council of Ministers.
Valdimar Víðisson has now concluded his term as Mayor of Hafnarfjörður after just over a year in this leadership position. The Municipality of Hafnarfjörður also thanks Valdimar for his cooperation, as he will continue to be a councillor for us residents of Hafnarfjörður.
Two town councillors gave their maiden speeches yesterday. Viktor Pétur Finnsson and Einar Geir Þorsteinsson.
