New majority in Hafnarfjörður 2026-2030
Sjálfstæðisflokkur, Viðreisn and Samfylkingin signed a new coalition agreement for the majority of Hafnarfjörður's town council yesterday afternoon for the 2026-2030 term. The new coalition agreement is titled: Freedom, Responsibility, Welfare and Quality of Life.
New coalition agreement for Hafnarfjörður
Sjálfstæðisflokkur, Viðreisn and Samfylkingin signed a new coalition agreement for the majority of Hafnarfjörður's town council yesterday afternoon for the 2026-2030 term. The new coalition agreement is titled: Freedom, Responsibility, Welfare and Quality of Life.
The parties will have 7 of the 11 councillors on the town council for the new term. Orri Björnsson, leader of Sjálfstæðisflokkur, will continue as chairman of the town board. Karólína Helga Símonardóttir, leader of Viðreisn, will be the new speaker of the town council. The agreement and the coalition government were presented at a press conference at the Áshamar nursery school in the Hamranes district.
The shared vision of the three parties is for Hafnarfjörður to become a strong, a family-friendly and progressive municipality where sound management, strong core services, a dynamic business community and an improved quality of life for residents at all stages of life go hand in hand, as stated in the parties' policy agreement.
Freedom, responsibility, welfare and quality of life
The majority appointed external council members. Þórður Þórarinsson will become the mayor.

Viktor Pétur Finnsson (D), Árni Stefán Guðjónsson (C), Karólína Helga Símonardóttir (C), Hildur Rós Guðbjargardóttir (S), Orri Björnsson (D), Árni Rúnar Þorvaldsson (S), Kristín Thoroddsen (D) and the new mayor, Þórður Þórarinsson.
Key projects according to the coalition agreement:
- Ensure the reliable operation and strong financial position of Hafnarfjörður
- An operational and administrative review of the council's operations shall be conducted with the aim of making administration more efficient and decision-making clearer and quicker.
- Operations will be streamlined and the town's debt reduced, while ensuring that there is no reduction in services.
- Council Tax will not be increased during the term of office and property taxes in the local authority will not rise above the rate of inflation.
- Increased dialogue and consultation will be held with residents, stakeholders and user and interest councils.
- The Procurement Council will be strengthened with the aim of increasing professionalism in tendering and ensuring favourable procurement of all goods and services for the municipality.
- Administration will be simplified through digital transformation to improve services and speed up the processing of cases.
Results of the municipal elections in Hafnarfjörður
Five of the six lists won seats on the Hafnarfjörður town council; the D-list of Sjálfstæðisflokkur received 3 representatives, The S-list of Samfylkining received 2 representatives, the B-list of Framsókn received 3 representatives and the C-list of Viðreisn received 2 representatives, the M-list of Miðflokkur received 1, but the A-list of the Left did not secure a seat. Turnout was 64.21%, with 24,593 people on the electoral roll.
