Creative Summer Jobs – Smári / Novel Writing and Creative Writing Course
Smári Hannesson, a publisher and writer, is working this year for the Creative Summer Jobs in Hafnarfjörður on a full-length novel and a creative writing course for children.
„My project in Creative Summer Jobs is twofold and very writing-focused. On the one hand, I run a creative writing course for children, and on the other, I am working on a full-length novel.“
Predatory writing workshop
„The aim of the creative writing course was to boost students“ writing and to enrich the variety of courses for children during the summer, and it's fair to say that both objectives were very successfully achieved. In Predatory Writing Workshops (Free admission), which took place from 7th to 9th July, we explored how to structure a story, writing techniques, character creation, writing exercises and more. The emphasis was on the fact that in creative writing, as in everything else, practice makes perfect. The course was very well received, and the idea of repeating it next year could well become a reality."
A passion project that will become a full-length novel
„Then there's the novel. I've been working on that passion project for the past two years and I'm aiming to put the final full stop on the first draft at the end of the summer. The thriller, Eldar, is aptly named; in it, important houses are burnt to the ground, fires rage in the main character's life, and of course, two characters are named Eldar. You could perhaps say that I'm passionate about this novel.“
Creative Summer Jobs Harvest Festival
Smári showed the results of the summer's work, read well-chosen passages from the novel and spoke about the summer's course on harvest festival Creative summer job on the 6th of August last, to a great reception.

About Creative Summer Jobs 2026
In the summer of 2021, the Municipality of Hafnarfjörður, in collaboration with the town's youth centre, Hamarinn, decided to revive the “Creative Summer Jobs” project, which had been run in the summer of 2017. Individuals and groups aged 18-25 were invited to submit ideas for creative projects in Hafnarfjörður. Selected groups were given the opportunity to work on various creative projects in different areas of the arts, which would also liven up the town's social life and delight tourists and residents in one way or another. The staff of the Creative Summer Jobs, run as part of the Hafnarfjörður Work School, are tasked with bringing the town to life, making it more fun, beautiful and diverse with artistic and creative events. The projects are varied and appeal to different age groups and interests.
This year, there are nine diverse projects operating as part of the Creative Summer Jobs scheme, and they will be presented weekly throughout the summer.
