Local council elections were held nationwide on Saturday, 16 May. A total of 6 new councillors will take their seats on the town council. See the results.
2026 Local Elections – Results
The Independence Party received the most votes here in Hafnarfjörður in the recent local elections, with 27.7% of the vote. The Progressive Party received 24.31%, the Social Democratic Party 17.81%, the Independence Alliance 14.31%, the Centre Party 11.41% and the Left 4.41%. The election was held on Saturday, 16 May.
The Independence Party (D) lost one councillor from the last election with 2.9 fewer votes than then, the Progressive Party (B) gained one but increased its vote share by 10.6%. The Social Democratic Party (S) lost two seats and lost 11.21% of its support since the last election. The Progressive Party (C) gained one seat and increased its support by 5.11%. The Centre Party (M) won one seat and increased its support by 8.61 percentage points. The Left Party (A) did not win a seat on the town council and stood for the first time.

Guðbjörg Oddný Jónasdóttir (D) and Árni Rúnar Þorvaldsson (S) are leaving their seats on the town council. Jón Ingi Hákonarson (C) and Margrét Vala Marteinsdóttir (B) are leaving altogether. Newcomers will include Karólína Helga Símonardóttir (C), Kolbrún Magnúsdóttir (B), Einar Geir Þorsteinsson (M), Viktor Pétur Finnsson (D), Árni Rúnar Árnason (B) and Árni Stefán Guðjónsson (C).
Eleven representatives make up the City Council of Hafnarfjörður. A total of 24,593 people were on the electoral roll. The turnout was 64.21%.
