The 10th grade of Víðistaðaskóli is performing the musical WEST SIDE STORY by Sondheim and Bernstein from 14th to 16th February. There will be five performances.

„This is one of the bravest casts I have ever worked with,“ says the director, Niels Thibaud Girerd, on his Facebook page. He is now directing the Year 10 production for the second year running, having worked a miracle with the children.

„They are the same age as the teenagers in the play and they burst into love, sorrow, dance and song. This is the story of teenagers in the past, present and future in a reality we often dare not face,“ writes Niels on Facebook. „They do this with integrity, maturity and courage. I consider myself honoured to work with them.“

The whole of Year 10 are coming to the show.

The set design, costumes, make-up, lighting and sound are all in the hands of the children and their parents. Kristín Högna Garðarsdóttir leads the creative team; she is a textiles teacher at Víðistaðaskóli and has been in charge of the costumes for the musical for the past 7 years. The choreography was created by Mirjam Yrsa Friðleifsdóttir. Jóhanna Ómarsdóttir is in charge of music and singing, just as she has been for the past 7 years.

The project is an annual collaboration between the school, the youth club Hraunsins, and parents. All Year 10 pupils are involved in the project in some way. The ambition that goes into this project is enormous. It is a real pleasure to watch the sports hall at Víðistaðaskóli transform into a magical theatre.

The ticket costs 1700 krónur and the show is about two hours and fifteen minutes long, including an interval. Tickets are available from Tix.
