An art select group at Öldutúnsskóli has been exploring art from more perspectives than the traditional painting or sculpture found in art museums and galleries around the world. The group has been working on art that connects with the community and its local environment. By giving their work and sharing their creations with the community, they can both connect with and engage the residents of the community that gets to enjoy it each time.
This group has been exploring murals as a way to express and share art, and thereby contribute to an improved environment. The students in the group are from the 9th and 10th grades at Öldutúnsskóli. The group decided to apply for permission to create a mural that could be connected both to nature and the town, using colourful contemporary art that features the Icelandic mountains alongside the lighthouse, which is in many ways a symbol of Hafnarfjörður. The work is a collaboration of all the pupils, and everyone took part in creating the prototype, which was then used as a guide for the large mural painted in the underpass by the Suðurbæjarlaug.
