Arnarberg Nursery School, located at Haukahraun 2 in Hafnarfjörður, is a four-unit nursery school with a focus on literacy in a broad sense. The school's motto is „Literacy is play“, and it reflects the core of all its work. 

Literacy in Arnarberg covers reading books, the individual's well-being, physical fitness and the environment. Play is the key to children's development in areas such as physical activity, language, communication, emotions and creativity.

Our guiding principles are „Respect, Cooperation and Trust“.“

We emphasise equality and the rights of all, and aim to promote tolerance, empathy and cooperation. The aim is for the children to become stronger and more independent individuals who face life with joy and confidence.

The nurseries of Hafnarfjörður have introduced improved working hours, based on a 36-hour working week for all staff.. Staff in the Association of Early Years Educators and the Association of Occupational Therapists have opted for an arrangement whereby their academic year is comparable to that of primary school teachers. These staff therefore take reduced working hours around Christmas and New Year, when there are half-term holidays in primary schools, during Holy Week, and with longer periods off in the summer.

Key responsibilities and duties:

  • Works on and is responsible for the upbringing and education of nursery children in accordance with the duties of the department manager.
  • Responsible for the management, planning, implementation and evaluation of the department's professional work.
  • Manages the daily work of the department and is responsible for the communication of information.
  • Responsible for ensuring that the school curriculum is followed and that all children receive appropriate teaching and care.
  • Responsible for all parent collaboration
  • Other duties as described in the job description

Educational and competency requirements:

  • Teacher's licence (accompanied by an application)
  • Experience as a department manager and with young children is desirable.
  • Experience in childcare or teaching young children is desirable.
  • Good communication skills and initiative
  • Organised and independent working methods
  • A sincere interest in the welfare of children
  • Good computer skills
  • A good command of Icelandic is required. The proficiency level C1 of the European Language Portfolio is expected., Self-assessment framework

The application deadline is 18 September 2026.

This is a fixed-term contract for 6 months, with the possibility of a permanent position.

If a qualified professional cannot be found, it may be considered to appoint a university-educated individual with experience of working with children, in accordance with Act No. 95/2019.

Remuneration in accordance with the collective agreement between the Association of Icelandic Local Authorities and the Icelandic Teachers' Association/Association of Early Childhood Educators.
