The majority of the Independence Party, the Reform Party and the Social Democratic Party on the Hafnarfjörður town council has decided to abandon plans for the development of temporary housing on Krýsuvíkurveg and Hvaleyrarvatnsveg. The decision was taken following a review of the project's premises, including in light of views expressed in discussions with residents. The majority is united in this decision.
The concept of developing temporary accommodation was intended to meet an important need for secure and high-quality housing for people working in the country for a shorter period, and to help reduce pressure on the housing market. Since the project was introduced, comments and opposition to the proposed development have been raised, including at a public meeting held at the town's initiative.
„We considered this an ambitious and interesting idea to meet a real need in the housing market. However, we have reviewed the project's premises in light of the views that have been raised, including at a public meeting we held on the matter. Our conclusion is that it is right to abandon the plans. It is a normal part of responsible decision-making to reassess a project when circumstances call for it,“ says Orri Björnsson, chairman of the Hafnarfjörður town council.
The need is still there
The majority also emphasises that the need the project was intended to address still exists and remains unresolved. It is well known that too many people live in overcrowded, unauthorised accommodation that does not meet safety and welfare standards. Such conditions are unacceptable, and it is important to continue seeking ways to improve the situation. It is important that local authorities begin a dialogue on how this problem can be solved.
