Children's opportunity to be independent, active and responsible participants in a democratic society

Hafnarfjörður Municipality and RannUng (Research Centre for Early Childhood Education at the Faculty of Education, University of Iceland) have signed a partnership agreement focusing on the operations of Hafnarfjörður's nursery schools, the youngest year groups of primary schools, and after-school clubs. The partnership is directly linked to the City of Hafnarfjörður's implementation of the 'Child-Friendly Municipality' initiative for 2022-2026. The aim of RannUng is to increase and strengthen research into the education and upbringing of young children aged 0-8, and to serve as a platform for professional development and knowledge exchange in this field. Two primary schools, three nurseries and two after-school clubs in Hafnarfjörður have decided to take part in the collaboration from September 2023.

A learning community of peers – a platform for dialogue and reflection

The aim of the project is to systematically implement the provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child in the work of nurseries, the lower years of primary school and after-school clubs in Hafnarfjörður, by creating a platform for dialogue and reflection and thereby establishing a learning community of peers. The project is based on the premise that children are experts in their own lives, able to form opinions on matters that concern them, express them, and influence their daily lives.

Increased knowledge of children's rights alongside increased participation by children in their school activities.

The aim of the project is to increase the knowledge of staff, carers and/or parents and children about children's rights, and to increase children's participation in daily school and leisure activities. The benefit for children is that practices in schools and leisure centres are guided by the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and that children are given the opportunity to be independent, active and responsible participants in a democratic society that is rapidly and continuously developing.
