Reduction or abolition of property tax
Discount or exemption from property tax is granted to pensioners on old-age and disability pensions, in accordance with the annual decision of the local council and the regulations, pursuant to the authority in the 4th paragraph of Article 5 of Act No. 4/1995 on the revenue bases of municipalities. At the start of 2024, the temporary discount for pensioners is based on 2022 income. The discount is recalculated when the 2023 tax return is finalised with the Tax Authority. If the review leads to a change in the discount, the change will be applied to the remaining payments for the year. The conditions for a reduction or cancellation are that the individual is the registered owner of a property and has their legal residence there. No separate application is required for the discount.
Property tax bills are available online only.
Assessment and amendment notices are not sent by post, in accordance with an amendment to Act No. 4/1995 which came into force on 1 January 2019. Property tax payment and assessment notices are published electronically only and can be accessed either on My Pages on the Hafnarfjörður website and on www.island.is.
