The Hafnarfjörður Town Council today approved preparations for an exhibition on the life and illustrious career of Björgvin Halldórsson, one of the nation's most beloved artists and a proud son of the town. The day is symbolic, as Björgvin would have turned 75 today.
A deep mark on Icelandic cultural life
The town wishes to honour with the exhibition the memory of a man who left a profound mark on Icelandic cultural life and had a unique relationship with the people of Hafnarfjörður.
Björgvin was born and raised in Hafnarfjörður, always proud of his origins and always closely connected to the town through his music, concerts at the Bæjarbíó and numerous cultural projects. He was named the City Artist of Hafnarfjörður in 2018 and was the first to receive a star at Bæjarbíó – an acknowledgement of the warmth and respect he was held in by the town's residents. The exhibition will be produced in close collaboration with Björgvin's family and friends, the Bæjarbíó cinema, the Hafnarfjörður Museum of Local History and other professionals. The idea for the project originated from conversations that had already taken place with Björgvin himself, and he was very enthusiastic about it.

Representatives of the town council, former members: Jón Ingi Hákonarson, Valdimar Víðisson, Hildur Rós Guðbjargardóttir, Árni Rúnar Þorvaldsson, Orri Björnsson, Margrét Vala Marteinsdóttir and Kristinn Andersen.
„Björgvin Halldórsson was not only a magnificent artist but also a unique Hafnarfjörður resident who gave his town invaluable joy, pride and memories. With this exhibition, we want to preserve his story and enable future generations to learn about the impact he had on our culture and community.“ says Orri Björnsson, chairman of the town council.
With this decision, the Hafnarfjörður Town Council and the Municipality of Hafnarfjörður wish to show their gratitude in a tangible way for Björgvin's invaluable contribution to music, culture, and the life of the town as a whole. He is and will be sorely missed, but his legacy will live on in the hearts of the people and in the history of the town.
