Many guests accepted the invitation to an open house at the Centre for Work and Activity in Hafnarfjörður, the town's new, combined work and activity resource for disabled people. Many people took the opportunity to visit the centre's premises, which are located in two places in the town, learn about the diverse services on offer, and meet the staff and participants.

Emphasis on participation, activity, well-being and opportunities

The Centre for Work and Activity brings together the former operations of the Wasps and the training centre in Bæjarhraun under one roof. The merger will make the service even more targeted and diverse, with a focus on participation, activity, well-being and opportunities for everyone to enjoy themselves. An open house was held at two locations. At Selhælla 7, visitors were given an insight into the work of Umhverfisvaktin, while at Suðurgata 14, the diverse services on two floors of the building were presented. The emphasis there is, on the one hand, on communication and sensory stimulation, and on the other, on physical and social activity.

Welcoming new projects with open arms

The Centre also welcomes new and varied projects from companies, organisations and others who wish to work with a dynamic and conscientious team. The group already undertakes tasks such as packing for businesses, assembling boxes and other packaging, inter-site deliveries, and producing swimming costumes and magnets – to name but a few. There are numerous opportunities for further collaboration.

A valuable way to increase the visibility of important services

Such projects are of great importance, both for the community as a whole and for the individuals who use the service and work within the Centre. They provide a platform for activity, skills development, participation and an improved quality of life, whilst carrying out valuable and useful work. Visitors welcomed the initiative, and a warm and positive atmosphere prevailed at both locations. An open house like this is a valuable way to strengthen connections, raise the profile of an important service, and highlight the human capital and strength that exists within the diverse community of Hafnarfjörður.
