Famous author visits Áslandsskóli
The author, actor and friend of Iceland, David Walliams, paid an unexpected visit to Áslandsskóli today, accompanied by representatives of the Icelandic publishing house that publishes his books. On the Áslandskóli website It can be read that he told amusing stories and described where he gets the inspiration for his books.
David Walliams also played a game with some pupils he chose at random to get ideas for a new story, and gave them a book as a reward. It is safe to say that he was a great delight to the pupils and staff alike, being exceptionally entertaining and down-to-earth in his demeanour.
Áslandsskóli out of strike
Yes, the joy shone from the children's faces. The excitement was plain to see. Today was the first day since the school strike was cancelled, which took place on 29th October.
Unnur Elfa Guðmundsdóttir is the headteacher of Ásland School. „The day was wonderful at Ásland School. There was a real buzz, everyone was happy, the pupils were excited and the staff too as they came to work,“ says Unnur, as it was the first day back after a strike by the staff.
„Williams was here for nearly an hour. He also went to the library and met some kids there. Then the teenagers got a photo with him. It was brilliant to have him.“
The children know Williams
Unnur says young people know William's books. „The children at Ásland School were among the very first to hear the book Grandma Glæbon, which was his first book to be published in this country,“ she says. „There was a teacher here who got the book before it was published and read it to her pupils. She tested the book on them, so to speak,“ she says.
David Williams had wanted to visit one primary school in the country and Áslandsskóli was chosen. „He got some good ideas for his next book,“ she says.
„Yes, a lively and boisterous day. It was a good day at Ásland School.“
