A new information service for all of us

A new information portal, Verksja.is, has been launched. There you can find information on all major projects under the Transport Agreement. Information is available on projects for major roads, the Bus Rapid Transit system, and pedestrian and cycle paths. This is according to a press release from Better Transport. It reads as follows:

„Population growth in the capital region is rapid and calls for a multifaceted transport infrastructure over the coming decades. The updated Transport Agreement for the capital region places primary emphasis on shorter journey times, fewer delays and improved traffic safety. The development of motorways and greatly improved public transport, as well as an increase in cycle and walking paths, are key elements in ensuring better transport links,“ the statement says.

Worker.is is a new information portal where you can find information on all major projects under the Transport Agreement. It includes overview maps, project status, scope, estimated completion dates, imagery and various other details.

Trunk roadsAccording to the updated Transport Agreement, six new projects will be undertaken on main roads in the capital region, in addition to the three that have already been completed. All the projects are intended to improve traffic flow and road safety. Construction work on Arnarnesveg is underway, but its connection to Breiðholtsbraut and Rjúpnaveg will be a major transport improvement.

The City LineIt is a high-quality public transport system (Bus rapid transit) where the Bus Rapid Transit buses will mostly run in dedicated lanes and have priority at junctions. This way, the Bus Rapid Transit buses will travel through the busiest areas of the capital region without other traffic affecting their journeys. The Fossvogsbrú is part of Phase 1 of the Borgarlína, but the bridge will also accommodate pedestrians and cyclists. It is estimated that around 10,000 people will use the bridge daily. Construction is scheduled to begin early in the new year.

Walking and cycling pathsA total of approximately 100 km of paths are planned for the capital region, including underpasses and bridges. Work has already been completed on around 20 km of foot and cycle paths. It is planned that around 131 million euros of the Transport Agreement's investment will go towards pedestrian and cycle paths, footbridges and underpasses.

The pressure on the capital region's transport system has increased enormously in recent years, and on average, 70 cars are added to the traffic each week. An increasing number of people are using cycle and pedestrian paths, and improvements to public transport are key to preventing further traffic delays.

It is estimated that by 2040, the population of the capital region will have risen to well over 300,000, an increase of 100,000 since 2019. At the start of 2024, nearly 244,000 people lived in the six municipalities. With the implementation of the Transport Agreement, all transport routes will be better supported, the load will be distributed, and services for residents improved.“
