Anton Sveinn McKee honoured
During the year, Anton Sveinn McKee, a swimmer from Hafnarfjörður Swimming Club, two-time Hafnarfjörður Sportsman of the Year and a member of the Icelandic national swimming team, announced his decision to hang up his racing costume after a successful career as one of the country's greatest swimmers. At the 2024 Hafnarfjörður Sports and Recognition Gala, held today, Anton Sveinn was specially honoured for his achievements and success.
A long and successful career behind them
Anton Sveinn McKee began his career with SH, the Hafnarfjörður Swimming Club, at the age of seven. At just 12 years old, he began to reap the rewards, launching a long career that has yielded numerous Icelandic championship titles in the 200m to 1500m freestyle, 400m individual medley, and 50m-200m breaststroke. Today, he holds 13 Icelandic records and 8 junior Icelandic records. He competed in 8 European Championships, with his best result coming in a thrilling final in the 200m breaststroke: 4th place in Belgrade in July 2024. He competed in 8 World Championships with good results, often reaching the semi-finals. His best result there was 6th place in the 200m breaststroke in 2022 in Budapest. Anton qualified for four Olympic Games: London 2012, Rio 2016, Tokyo 2021 and Paris 2024. In Paris, Anton Sveinn reached the semi-finals in the 200m breaststroke. Anton received a scholarship to study at the University of Alabama from 2013 to 2017, where he changed his swimming focus from distance events to shorter-distance breaststroke. He continued to train and compete as a professional, mostly in the United States in West Virginia after his university career, until 2023, but competed for Iceland and Sundfélag Hafnarfjarðar when he returned home in between.
A great role model
With a special recognition at the ceremony, the City of Hafnarfjörður and the Sports and Leisure Committee would like to thank Anton Sveinn for his contribution as a high-performance athlete, for being a role model for young athletes, and for his exceptional achievements and career.
