Open house at the Wasps in the run-up to Christmas
The Waspungers will be holding an open house on Monday, 2nd December. They begin preparations for the Christmas market there straight after the summer. You can find gems there, and the money raised is used for various events and pastimes.
Unique products at the Wasps' Christmas Market
The Wasps will be holding an open house in the run-up to Christmas. Specifically on Monday, 2nd December at 14 Southurgate.
„We start the preparations after the summer,“ says Þórdís Rúriksdóttir, director of Geitungar, a workplace and home for disabled people. The operation has grown rapidly. There are now 35 staff members.
A relaxed atmosphere prevails over the activity this Wednesday morning. The staff are cheerful and the atmosphere is good. They are working on a number of projects in partnership with the town, companies such as Hagkaup, Nettó and Múrbúðin, and have now also taken on packing vegetables into consumer packaging over the week.

A craft that yields a return
A host of handmade products now adorn their shop at 14 South Street. The proceeds from the Christmas market then go into a fund they use to treat themselves. Þórdís says it is therefore important for them all. „We dip into this fund and do things we wouldn't otherwise do,“ says Þórdís.
„Yes, the staff work on these tasks for half the year. Then we use the other half of the year to prepare for the summer,“ she says. The products at the market are varied, as the staff can be different. „The people here have various disabilities. They each make their own contribution,“ she says.
The wasps have a fixed presence and timetable. The days are very varied. The youngest staff member is 21 years old, while the oldest is 57.
„They are different, and so are their areas of interest. Consequently, their focuses are different. Not all of them are interested in art, but those who are design products for the market.“
The market for the third time
This is the third time the market has been held at the premises of Geitungarnir. It is open from 2 pm to 6 pm, with entry from Strandgatan.
The staff of Geitungar invite everyone, friends and family as well as visitors and passers-by, to see the craftsmanship, have some hot chocolate and perhaps buy a few Christmas presents at the same time.
