An incentive scheme for reading among children in the town's primary schools
Hafnarfjörður, in partnership with the start-up company Beanfee ehf., will work systematically over the coming quarters to implement a reading incentive scheme for children in the town's primary schools. The aim is to help more pupils master reading, with a focus on reading at home, i.e. both as part of their primary school education and other reading, especially for pleasure. The project utilises the Beanfee customised tool to help those children who need special encouragement and support with their reading.
A dual reward system in the form of rewards and achievement badges
Beanfee Ltd. has spent recent years developing a special tool in collaboration with the municipality and the University of Iceland, and research conducted by the University of Iceland has already demonstrated its effectiveness in supporting learning and positive behaviour. Beanfee is Helgi Sigurður Karlsson's attempt to use evidence-based methods of behaviour analysis to solve behavioural and learning difficulties. The tool in question is software that connects a student in training with school staff and their guardian, with the aim of providing real-time guidance and support. To motivate the pupil, a dual reward system of incentives and achievement badges is set up, which is jointly managed by the school and the home. Beanfee also offers a powerful information hub that educates users on what they need to know to succeed. Research, as well as case studies from the Hafnarfjörður school community, indicate that Beanfee can be used to achieve success in various issues related to behavioural and motivational problems that have previously proved difficult to resolve. Beanfee aims to continue researching the software's effectiveness in collaboration with the University of Iceland.
