The National Commissioner of Police, in consultation with the Police Commissioner for the South-West, decided on 8 September to cancel the alert level for the volcanic eruption in Meradalir on the Reykjanes Peninsula. The civil defence alert level for the seismic activity on the Reykjanes Peninsula has also been cancelled.
The activity has been down for almost three weeks
Activity in the craters in Meradölum has been dormant for almost three weeks, and seismological measurements have been consistent with this. The area is still being closely monitored for any increase in seismic activity, unrest and land deformation. Injection-related activity and earthquakes can be expected on the Reykjanes Peninsula in the coming months, and people are therefore urged to secure their belongings to prevent injury and damage. Rangers are now working at the lava fields. They are monitoring traffic and public conduct, among other things. The police and rescue services will continue to respond to calls and requests for assistance, but their presence in the area will be reduced.
It is inadvisable to go out onto the lava field, but craters and lava fields are under special protection in accordance with the provisions of the Nature Conservation Act.
