Barrel exchanges due to the harmonised classification system will begin this spring.

As has been announced, a new classification system will be introduced in the capital region in the spring of 2023, under which four waste streams will be collected from every household.
Some confusion has arisen among residents about this, and some have believed that the bin changes will begin at the start of next year. However, the truth is that any changes to residents' bins, if any, will not begin until this spring at the earliest. Residents in Hafnarfjörður do not need to take any action when the bin changes come into effect next spring, other than to be diligent with their sorting.

Under the Circular Economy Act, which comes into force at the turn of the year, households will be required to sort household waste into four categories: paper, plastic packaging, organic waste (food waste) and mixed waste. The main objective is to minimise the number of bins for residents as much as possible, and in most cases, bins will be placed in the space already available at home. This will be a major step forward for environmental and climate issues, but for example, all households will receive a bin for food waste.
