Before and after the competition of the Hafnarfjörður Work School
Around 1,300 young people are employed in the Hafnarfjörður Summer Job Scheme for the summer of 2023. The Work School is intended as young people's first workplace, where they get to experience being in the labour market and learn to be a part of it in a safe working environment. Öldutúnsskóli was the winner of the 2023 clean-up competition.
Around 1,300 young people employed in work experience during the summer of 2023.
The Hafnarfjörður Summer Job Scheme is intended as the first workplace for children and young people, where they can experience being in the labour market and learn to be a part of it in a safe working environment. This year, 1,091 young people aged 17 and under are employed by the work school in a variety of jobs at 57 locations across the town. 186 young people aged 18 and over are also employed by the work school. One of the work school's main tasks each year is to keep the town clean and beautiful. As in previous years, the work school recently launched a competition between areas and neighbourhoods.
Öldutúnsskóli won the competition for the best-cleaned area in 2023.
The practice at the work school is to break up the work regularly each summer, and in recent years the group has organised a competition between school teams, which involves cleaning areas and having the best 'before and after' photos. Almost without fail, the school groups unite for the competition, and everyone takes part in working towards the common goal of having the best-cleaned area. All the groups saw great results, but this time it was Öldutúnsskóli who came out on top and were rewarded with a pizza party for the whole group.
Activities, routine and socialising with peers over the summer
The work scheme is not just about the work itself; it is also designed to socially engage young people, help them maintain a routine and reduce social isolation during the summer. Great emphasis is placed on having fun at work and breaking up the traditional workday with peer-to-peer learning, competitions for the best-cleaned area, and an end-of-summer celebration. Often, this is the first time children and young people have had paid work, and the work school gives them the opportunity to take these first steps under guidance and alongside their peers. The City of Hafnarfjörður guarantees all young people aged 14-17 a place in the work school. 14-year-olds are employed in a general group in their local school catchment area, and the following year, additional opportunities are offered to those who want to fully commit to the work and prove themselves in their role. A variety of jobs are available for 18-year-olds and older, but it is not possible to guarantee a job at the work school for everyone in this age group.
