Change to tariffs from 1 November

In mid-October, parents and guardians of primary school children in Hafnarfjörður received notification of a 33% increase in the school meal tariff for primary schools and a 19% increase in the food charge for nurseries, effective from 1 November. The increase is due to rising costs of supplies and other items for Skólamat ehf. Emphasis was placed on maintaining the cost-sharing contribution for parents and guardians, which will remain the same before and after the changes.

School meals in the hands of Skólamatur since 2017

The production and service of meals for nurseries and primary schools in Hafnarfjörður was last put out to tender in the spring of 2019, and a subsequent contract was awarded to Skólamat for the period 2019-2023. Skólamatur had been providing the service since 1 November 2017. The contract period was four years, with provisions for two one-year extensions. At the end of the contract period, Skólamatur did not request an extension of the contract as it stood, but instead requested a change to the unit price in order to continue the service. The Hafnarfjörður Town Council decided to grant Skólamatur's request for a change to the unit price at its meeting on 11 October. Preparations for a new tender will begin after the New Year.

Sibling discount

From 1 January 2019, a change was introduced to the meal charge for families with children of primary school age in Hafnarfjörður. The meal charge is waived if there are more than two children of primary school age in the same family enrolled in the meal scheme. If two or more siblings with a permanent residence in Hafnarfjörður are of primary school age, the municipality of Hafnarfjörður provides a 25% discount on the school lunch for the second sibling and a 100% discount from the third sibling onwards.
