Creative work for children and young people where arts, movement, joy and enjoyment are prioritised.

A one-year contract has been signed with the Hafnarfjörður School of Choreography for the company's creative work and services, which truly promotes the diversity that exists in leisure and recreation within the municipality. The School of Choreography offers organised dance classes, and the City of Hafnarfjörður's partnership with the School of Choreography is based on the value of the arts, physical activity and sport for educational and preventative work. In autumn 2021, discussions will take place regarding the renewal of the contract, taking into account the number of participants and the success of the children's and youth work during the year. The city's fixed contribution under the contract is kr. 400,000. The leisure bus will have a stop at the school.

School choice for students in secondary school

The City of Hafnarfjörður and the School of Choreography are, in accordance with their agreement, authorised to arrange for pupils in the lower secondary school to choose their subjects. This gives pupils the opportunity to select activities at the School of Choreography as an elective within their school curriculum. The agreement also includes the mandate for the Hafnarfjörður Work Camp to enter into contracts for the 2021 summer courses, and for the work camp's staff to serve as assistants at the Listdansskólinn's summer courses under the school's supervision.

About the Hafnarfjörður School of Choreography

The Hafnarfjörður School of Choreography began its activities in January 1994, with 12 students enrolled. By 2015, the number of students had grown to 420, who studied children's dances, children's ballet, children's jazz dance, classical ballet, jazz dance, hip hop, show dance, silks, contemporary dance, and dances for those aged 20 and over. The school is privately run and classes are held at Helluhraun 16-18. The owner and head teacher is Eva Rós Guðmundsdóttir. The Hafnarfjörður School of the Arts holds an annual spring show at the Borgarleikhúsið on 1st May. In addition, students perform in the school's Christmas show, which is held either at the Gaflar Theatre or in the school's own halls. Each year, the school also organises the Dance Cup, an in-house competition where students get to try their hand at choreographing their own dances. Both teachers and members of the school's student association have run the competition, which is always a great success with students and parents alike. Students aged 13 and over have the opportunity to go on a dance trip with the school to London every other year. There, they spend 4-6 days with the school's teachers, attending dance classes, workshops and a musical. The school has also taken part in dance competitions abroad, with a group of students from the Hafnarfjörður School of Choreography winning a dance competition in Spain in 2015.
