 Payments spread to facilitate

Construction work in Hafnarfjörður has gained momentum after the rules on payment of construction and road-building charges were changed. The contracts signed in the last two months already outnumber those from the rest of the year.

„I am certain that the decision by the current majority, which allows developers to split road construction and building rights fees into four instalments and pay them over a period of up to two years, has helped to facilitate the projects,“ says Orri Björnsson, chairman of the Hafnarfjörður town council.

Orri says it is pleasing to see that the rule change is yielding results straight away. It is intended to increase the ability of businesses and individuals to start construction projects. He points out that the rules are being introduced temporarily for two years to respond to the tightening lending environment and rising funding costs. It is part of an effort to ease the burden on homebuilders and ensure there is no housing shortage in Hafnarfjörður in the future. He encourages people and businesses to familiarise themselves with the new rules.

„We are seeing a great deal of interest from homebuilders in bringing their plans to fruition in the near future. We will see many exciting projects get underway in the coming months,“ says Orri, naming projects in Ásland 4, at Suðurhöfnin and Hrauni west, as well as plans for commercial premises in Kapelluhraun, among others.

„It is important that the City of Hafnarfjörður does its part to keep the wheels of industry turning.“
