Residents encouraged to exercise according to their ability and enjoyment

It is safe to say that the staff of the Kvennastyrkur fitness centre in the heart of Hafnarfjörður take the centre's approach to training, respect, ambition and togetherness beyond its walls. Once a week, Viðar Bjarnason, one of the two owners, visits the centre's neighbour at 29 Hverfisgata and offers free, tailored training for the residents of the building. Straumhvarf provides independent accommodation for people with mental health conditions, and the group has made good use of the building's car park, meeting there every Wednesday for 45 minutes at a time with health and wellbeing in mind. On average, eight residents have taken part in the training, at a pace that suits their own ability and desire.

Love of one's neighbour – wholesome for the soul and spirit

The initiative became a reality after Viðar and Rakel Róbertsdóttir, director of Straumhvarf, discussed the importance of exercise for the mental and physical health of everyone, and especially for those who are suffering from mental illness. Rakel is an occupational therapist, family counsellor and clinical hypnotherapist, and has worked as the manager of an independent living facility for people with mental health conditions for the City of Hafnarfjörður for 14 years. Rakel's experience is extensive, but at its core, it is primarily about people and their well-being, and how to improve their quality of life through conversation and strengthening relationships. Vidar is a personal trainer and a seasoned professional in the field of fitness, who in his training has focused on adapting exercises to individual needs and encourages people in a constructive and supportive way. Viðar and Rakel share a belief in the power of exercise and all forms of health promotion, and have here put a fantastic idea into practice for the benefit of the residents of Straumhvarf. The power of individual initiative is great, as is clearly demonstrated by this project, and the Healthy City of Hafnarfjörður wholeheartedly welcomes the initiative.

Women's Empowerment – Health Promotion on Your Own Terms

Women's strength is a fitness centre in the heart of Hafnarfjörður, specifically designed for women of all ages. Women can enjoy motivating, professional and high-quality training, a variety of group classes and a well-equipped gym. The approach of Kvennastyrkur is based on training, respect, ambition and solidarity. Participants are, for example, encouraged to respect one another, the history and experience of each individual, and to recognise that there is no single right way in life. Everyone is unique.
