First spade of Icelandair's new headquarters
Icelandair staff broke ground on the company's new headquarters in Hafnarfjörður yesterday. The premises will be modern and flexible, and will bring together the company's operations in the capital region, excluding airport operations, under one roof. This 5,200-square-metre building will connect to the company's existing premises, which houses its training centre and technical department.

The shovel used was designed and built by staff at the Icelandair maintenance hangar at Keflavik Airport and is, among other things, made from a used engine blade from one of the airline's Boeing 757 aircraft. Construction will now begin in earnest, with the aim of bringing the new facility into use by the end of 2024.

The new headquarters will place a strong emphasis on good workability and a variety of workspaces, allowing employees to choose their workspace for each project. The building will be characterised by a strong core that supports robust collaboration, innovation, and fosters connections. A competition for the design of the new headquarters was held last year, and eighteen proposals were received from domestic and international architecture firms. Ultimately, the proposal from Nordic Office of Architecture was selected. Nordic is an international architecture firm with an office in Iceland.
Sustainability as a guiding principle
Icelandair places great emphasis on sustainability and the new headquarters will be designed, built and operated in accordance with the BREEAM environmental certification system. The BREEAM environmental certification (British Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) is intended to identify and reduce the environmental impact of buildings. BREEAM is one of the most comprehensive and best environmental certification systems available today.

„The construction of the new headquarters in Hafnarfjörður is an exciting milestone in the long history of Icelandair. We have had offices in Vatnsmýri since the mid-1960s and in that time we have managed to build a very strong company. We are now bringing two large sites together into a modern building that meets our needs and supports our goal of being the best place to work in Iceland. This supports excellent performance and the well-being of our staff, which is the foundation of the company's success.“ says Bogi Nils Bogason, CEO of Icelandair.
