The City of Hafnarfjörður's community gardens are open to all residents, offering a fantastic opportunity for individuals and families to grow their own vegetables. It was decided to let demand determine the supply of gardens, and applications were initially opened for 64 gardens at Víðistaðir. Demand is so high that 56 family gardens at Öldur, at the top of Öldugata, have now also been opened.
84 people have already applied for family allotments. 120 allotments are available to residents of Hafnarfjörður this summer, leaving only 37 still available for those interested. A large part of the group has already started planting vegetables, while others are in the phase of choosing a suitable plot and preparing for their planting. „This summer, the price for a garden plot was changed from 5,000 to 1,500 krónur, and now vegetables or other ingredients are not included as they were before. Experience shows us that people have very different things they want to plant, and the simpler the price, the better.“ says Bára Kristín Þorgeirsdóttir, director of the Hafnarfjörður Summer Job Scheme. The family plots are handed over tilled, and allocations began at the end of May. Registration is now open. My Pages On the City of Hafnarfjörður website under Applications – Primary Schools – Registration for Summer Courses. You must bring proof of payment to the office of the Hafnarfjörður Work School and select a garden. „It's wonderful to see whole families coming together in the garden to grow their own produce. Fun moments are created around the cultivation, from choosing vegetables to harvesting. We encourage everyone interested to apply; there are still a few plots available.“says Bára Kristín.
