Hafnarfjörður Harbour – new connections and friendships
The Hafnarfjörður Youth Council spent last weekend in Höfn in Hornafjörður in wonderful weather with young people from the Hornafjörður Youth Council. The visit is part of the cooperation project 'Höfn in Hafnarfirði', which is funded by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union.
An ambitious collaborative project between two youth councils
The Youth Council of Hafnarfjörður spent last weekend in Höfn in Hornafjörður, enjoying the lovely weather with the young people of the Hornafjörður Youth Council. The visit is part of the 'Höfn in Hafnarfjörður' partnership project, which is funded by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union, and aims for the youth councils to find ways to actively involve marginalised young people, such as young people of foreign origin, young disabled people and young LGBTQ+ people, so that the youth councils better reflect the diversity of the community and all young people have a voice. The two municipalities share, among other things, that a significant proportion of their residents are of foreign origin.
The results of the collaboration are used for the benefit of all young people.
The first part of the project took place in Hafnarfjörður from 20 to 23 April., The Hornfirðingar then visited Hamarinn, the youth centre in Hafnarfjörður. There, they listened to talks from young queer people, disabled people, people of foreign origin, refugees, and UNICEF. Now it was the turn of Höfn, and there the young people spent the weekend producing a documentary in which they plan to share the entire process and what they have learnt from it. The aim is then for other youth councils from all over the country to learn something from all of this and use the project's findings for the benefit of all young people.
Analysis and education on diversity results in a documentary film
In addition to working on the documentary, the young people made good use of their time to explore the beautiful surroundings of Hornafjörður. The highlight of the trip was undoubtedly when the group took a dip in a hidden pool near Haukafell in 20-degree heat. Over the weekend, new friendships were formed and it can be said that the ties between the municipalities have been greatly strengthened. The young people agree to continue the collaboration in the coming years.
