Rangers from the Environmental Agency and volunteers from the World Friends group, who are currently in Iceland, went to Helgafell this morning to erase the initials, symbols and names that have been carved into the basalt rock on the mountain in recent weeks and months. Helgafell is one of the most popular hiking trails in the capital region, located in the back garden of Hafnarfjörður, and, like too many other mountains, has received its share of unsightly graffiti and vandalism.  On a fine day, hundreds of Icelanders and foreign visitors walk up the mountain, and Helgafell has proven to be a path to better health for many.

The group was well-equipped and, armed with wire brushes and manpower, found it relatively easy to erase the graffiti, some of which was quite old. Nearly 80 signs of vandalism were erased during the group's five-hour trip to Helgafell.  It was considered timely to undertake this action to remove the graffiti, which had become excessive and spread all over the mountain.
